The fourth fight between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez gets closer to becoming a reality as Top Rank promoter Bob Arum starts to distance away from his earlier proposal to hold a rematch between the former WBO champion and Timothy Bradley.
The Top Rank CEO said he is open to holding the fourth installment of the Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez fight if the Mexican government helps him put up money for the bout.
“If the conditions are met, if someone puts up the money, we could take the fight to Mexico,” Arum said.
Arum said the fight will be greatly beneficial to the Mexican economy as both fighters are closely followed by a large fan base.
“The government knows what that kind of an event would do in the city and they know the economic benefits there would be. [The leaders in Mexico City] should work together to [make it happen],” the veteran promoter said.
Manny Pacquiao just lost his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown to Timothy Bradley via controversial split decision. Arum, earlier wanted an immediate rematch, but inquiries on the fight results could delay the fight from taking place.
The boxing promoter also realized that the rematch is unlikely to generate much revenue given the controversial outcome of the bout. A Pacquiao vs Marquez IV fight seems to be a more lucrative option for the fighting congressman.
“We have to see what’s the more lucrative fight to do,” Arum earlier said. “Manny has to see that as a choice.”
“He fought a very close, controversial fight with Marquez that some people felt Marquez won. He fought a fight with Bradley that nobody thought he lost, other than the two judges,” he added.
